Explore the incredible Bay of Fundy, famous for hosting the highest tides in the world between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
In the Minas Basin of Canada's Bay of Fundy, the tide can rise an astonishing 16 meters (53 feet), setting the world record for tidal range. This extraordinary phenomenon, occurring between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, is driven by a unique combination of tidal resonance within the bay's natural rocking motion and its funnel-shaped basin. Twice daily, approximately 100 billion tonnes of water surge in and out, a volume equivalent to more than double the combined flow of all the world's rivers.
This immense energy has long attracted interest for tidal power generation. While the Annapolis Royal Generating Station, North America's only tidal power plant, was decommissioned in 2019, efforts continue to harness the bay's force. The Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) in the Minas Passage is a prime location for in-stream tidal turbines, with infrastructure capable of handling up to 64 megawatts. Recently, a project to deploy up to three O2-X tidal energy devices, capable of generating 7.5 megawatts, has been authorized for deployment at the FORCE site.
