Test your knowledge on the continent's pioneering efforts in designing and manufacturing its own smartphones, with production facilities in Rwanda and South Africa.
On October 7, 2019, Mara Group launched the Mara X and Mara Z smartphones in Kigali, Rwanda, marking the debut of the continent's first "Made in Africa" smartphones. This initiative distinguished itself from existing African assembly plants by undertaking full manufacturing processes, from motherboards to packaging, within its Rwandan facility. The introduction of Mara Phones aimed to foster digital inclusion and reduce reliance on imported technology by offering locally produced devices.
Following the Rwandan launch, Mara Group established a second manufacturing facility in Durban, South Africa, later that same month. These state-of-the-art plants were intended to bolster local economies by creating jobs, with the Rwandan factory notably employing a workforce comprising over 90% youth and 60% women. The development of Mara Phones represented a significant stride towards strengthening Africa's technological capabilities and promoting industrialization across the continent.
