About Halloween Traditions

Halloween's roots are found in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated over 2,000 years ago in areas now known as Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France. This festival marked the end of summer and the harvest, ushering in the "darker half" of the year. The Celts believed that on the night of Samhain, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to return to the earthly realm. To ward off or disguise themselves from these wandering spirits, people would light bonfires and wear costumes.

Many beloved Halloween traditions stem from these early practices. Jack-o'-lanterns, originally carved from turnips in Ireland to frighten away malevolent spirits, transitioned to pumpkins in North America. Trick-or-treating evolved from customs like "souling" and "guising" in Ireland and Scotland, where people went door-to-door performing or begging for food. Wearing costumes continues the ancient tradition of disguising oneself from spirits.

While Halloween is widely celebrated in Western countries, its observance varies globally. In Mexico, Día de los Muertos is a related celebration honoring the deceased. Guatemala hosts the Festival de Barriletes Gigantes, featuring giant kites to honor All Saints Day and the Day of the Dead. The traditions, brought to North America by Irish and Scottish immigrants, demonstrate how ancient customs have evolved and spread worldwide.
