Test your knowledge on India's most iconic symbol of love and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, often considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Completed in 1653, the Taj Mahal stands on the right bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. This mausoleum was commissioned in 1631 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth. The construction of the main mausoleum was finished by 1648, with the entire 17-hectare complex, including a mosque and guest house set in formal gardens, completed over a period of 22 years.
The complex, primarily built from white Makrana marble and red sandstone, involved over 20,000 workers and artisans, led by architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori. Its design blends Persian, Islamic, and Indian architectural styles, showcasing intricate marble inlays with 28 types of precious and semi-precious stones, such as jade, crystal, turquoise, lapis lazuli, sapphire, and carnelian. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the Taj Mahal was also declared a winner of the New7Wonders of the World initiative in 2007.
