Test your knowledge on the heart of African unity, the iconic African Union Headquarters located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, officially opened on January 28, 2012, representing a $200 million gift from the Chinese government. This architectural complex serves as the center of continental diplomacy, providing a unified venue for pan-African deliberations. Its main building stands 99.9 meters tall, a deliberate height chosen to reference September 9, 1999, the date the Sirte Declaration was signed, which led to the establishment of the African Union.
The complex includes a 20-story office tower for the African Union Commission and a plenary hall with a 2,500-person capacity, alongside 32 additional conference rooms. Designed by Tongji Architectural Design Group Company Limited of China, the external appearance features elements suggesting two embracing hands, intended to symbolize the relationship between Africa and China. This facility replaced older administrative buildings, consolidating the organization's operations into a modern environment for the continent's diplomatic engagements.
