Test your knowledge of the iconic figures and dramatic events of Japan's tumultuous 15th and 16th centuries, an era widely popularized in games and anime.
The Sengoku period, or "Warring States period," began in Japan with the Ōnin War in 1467, marking an era of profound civil conflict and political fragmentation. During this time, the central authority of the Ashikaga shogunate waned significantly, allowing numerous regional feudal lords, known as daimyo, to emerge and vie for control across the country. This led to a century of continuous warfare and social upheaval, characterized by gekokujo, a phenomenon where subordinates overthrew their superiors to seize power. Portuguese merchants also arrived in 1543, introducing firearms like the arquebus, which reshaped battlefield tactics.
This tumultuous period, lasting roughly until 1600, concluded with the gradual unification of Japan by three prominent figures: Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Nobunaga initiated the process of consolidating power, Hideyoshi continued these efforts and completed much of the unification, and Ieyasu ultimately solidified central rule after his victory at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. He then established the Tokugawa Shogunate, which brought an end to the widespread warfare.
